Why Can’t I Sleep?
“Sleep is the golden chain that links health and our bodies together.” -Thomas Dekker
Sleep is where our bodies can rest, recover, learn information, and store memories (National Institutes of Health (NIH), 2019). For many, sleep can be very challenging. Sleep issues can also be multifactorial.
Seven things that happen during sleep:
- The brain processes the day’s information
- Hormones flood your body
- The sympathetic nervous system (fight or flight) calms down
- Cortisol (stress hormone) levels lower
- Muscles paralyze and you are not able to move
- Anti-Diuretic Hormone (ADH) helps you not have to pee
- The immune system releases inflammation fighting cytokines (a protein that fights inflammation, infection, trauma) (The State of Queensland, 2018)
Tips to promote sleep:
- Develop a bedtime routine
- Maintain a consistent schedule
- Avoid technology two-hours before bed
- Healthy stress management throughout the day
